Capital Area Writing Project (CAWP) District Partnerships

Partnerships are relationships with school districts that may last longer than a single academic year. The National Writing Project encourages its local sites to explore and nurture these ongoing partnerships as a way to promote lasting improvement in the teaching of writing in our schools. Capital Area Intermediate Unit

In partnership with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, we will offer several workshops throughout the year. Upcoming CAIU sessions

  • Reading in the Content Areas at the Middle and Secondary Levels
    Monday, December 17, 2007 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.   $100 for six Act 48 Credits
    The workshop focuses on good practices that promote better literacy for struggling students as well as proficient ones.This day is geared for content area teachers who are not trained in reading instruction yet are willing to include good reading strategies within the context of their subject areas. During the session,participants will experiment in some of the same difficulties with text that their students experience and then practice strategies to help students enhance their literacy skills as they increase their content area abilities.Please bring a content area text with you.
  • Preparing Your Students for the PSSA: Keeping Writing Real
    Wednesday, January 16, 2008 8:30a.m.-3:30 p.m.   $!00 for six Act 48 Credits
    This workshop will show you how you can be true to best practices in writing instruction AND prepare your students for the PSSA. By approaching test taking as a genre or unit of study, you can integrate test prep into your current writing program.We will examine sample PSSA prompts and a variety of student responses with different ratings.We will collaborate to produce a master list of desired characteristics for writing in response to prompts. Workshop participants will engage in writing to shape a personal topic or story as a response to a prompt.These approaches can be used with students within your existing writing program.
