General Enrollment Information

Admissions and Registration: Enrollment in the ESL Specialist and Leadership Certificate Program is open to all P-12 educators and to candidates in the Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum program. Candidates may choose to take only one or two courses for elective credit, or decide to complete the entire course sequence. Upon successful completion of the four-course sequence, candidates with Level I or Level II teacher certification are recommended by Penn State Harrisburg and, with the written approval of their school districts or intermediate units, apply to PDE for the ESL Program Specialist endorsement.

Penn State Harrisburg has been approved by PDE to offer the ESL Specialist and Leadership Certificate Program as a four-course sequence of 12 elective graduate credits. An eligible participant must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

A potential candidate may enroll online, by mail, or in person as a non-degree graduate applicant or be admitted as a graduate student into the Master of Education in Teaching and Curriculum Program. Admission and registration procedures can be found at http://www.hbg.psu.edu/hbg/registinstr.html. Every Penn State candidate must also apply for a Penn State Personal Identification Number (PIN), which will provide access to services such as the Penn State library system, e-Lion (degree audit, grades), and ANGEL (course management system).

The candidate should also complete an ESL Student Data Sheet for the ESL program office. In addition, if the candidate would like to apply for grant support, s/he should complete the ESL Scholarship Application form, as well as sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which will be implemented if the candidate receives an award. The grant funding covers the cost of tuition and fees for ESL courses. Funding will continue as long as grant funds continue to be available and the candidate remains in good academic standing.
