Capital Area Institute for Mathematics and Science
CAIMS's screen shotThrough a grant from the Whitaker Foundation, the Capital Area Math and Science Alliance was established in 1995 as a project of the Council for Public Education. The initial charge was to serve as a catalyst to bring together education, business, industry, labor, government, and the community in order to promote excellence in science, mathematics, and technology education for all students in the Capital Region. In the Fall of 1995, the Math/Science Alliance convened the Capital Region Congress on Mathematics and Science Education. Participants in the Congress included students, parents, math teachers, science teachers, administrators, school board members, representatives from business and industry, legislators, non-profit organizations, professional associations, and higher education. The Congress focused on four issues:
  • Potential Actions
  • Incentives
  • Representation
  • Assessment
Hazardous Waste

Hazardous Waste screen shotPenn State Harrisburg received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Environmental Education Grants Program to develop materials and resources available for middle, junior high or high school teachers who include environmental education in their curriculum that address the Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology in the area of Hazardous Waste. The work products to be developed and delivered in this program include: a resource guide, four teacher workshops to be delivered summer 2003 that will provide lesson plans and an instructional manual, and an interactive teacher exchange web page.

Located in Harrisburg, the institute serves parents and childcare providers in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties.

Typically, students interested in Adult Education are engaged in or oriented toward careers as administrators, instructors of adults, staff developers, and program planners in learning environments such as business and industry, community development, staff development, professional continuing education, corrections education, literacy and adult basic education, religious education, human services, correspondence and distance education, higher education, and university extension.

 

Pennsylvania Education Network and Curriculum Implementation Linkages (PEN-CIL)

It is a database that is designed to create curriculum electronically. There are curriculum resources from over 22 school districts. The database contains over 50,000 objectives, instructional strategies, internet resources, and instructional resources. A teacher and/or administrator will find the database user friendly, easy, and extremely helpful with finding the lastest resources and teaching tools to use in the classroom.
